Jennifer Lawrence is returning to the sci-fi genre, as she will star in an original thriller The Flood alongside director Zach Cregger. The actress will lead the star studded cast of the film, which is being kept tightly under wraps before its release in 2028.
Cregger, the writer-director and star of Barbarian- who also helmed the hit horror thriller Weapons- will write, direct, and produce The Flood. The Disney/20th Fox/Illumination film is being developed for Warner Bros. And New Line Cinema and Amblin Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment. Warner Bros. Has set the film for release Aug. 11, 2028.
While the filmmakers are very secretive about the plot, the film people say is original scifi thriller. Based on sources the film will take us into deep space, allowing Cregger to grasp this genre far from the mundane realities of several of his past films. The hush surrounding the plot has been able to create the aura of mystery.
Cregger’s recent theatrical career has Sure made his next original film an intriguing proposition. His 2022 feature Barbarian proved that he was a filmmaker who could pull you into suspense due to unconventional concepts while Weapons picked up where that left off and proved to be a major box office hit. Now he’s entering an even larger sci-fi universe with The Flood.
For Lawrence, the film is yet one more in a series of forays into the world of science fiction. Having established a link to the genre through the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise (not to mention her previous role in director-passenger film Passengers), the actress has a chance to figure out a new perspective to her science-fictionizing through her choice of a producer known for eerie authorshipand thrillers.
This collaboration also means Lawrence returns to top studio fare and can contribute her talent to an original project rather than an existing franchise. Forays into a major studio location have been described by Warner Bros. Executives as being a priority for casting the actress, while Cregger has been enthusiastic in regards to Lawrence.
